Lala Junkie
I came from Italy to the USA 10 years ago and I brought with me a deep love for the arts of any kind and form, of any period in time. I now work as a fashion designer for a very corporate large company in Los Angeles, but it isn't enough to appease my brain, so I started Lala Junkie as a creative project from the comfort of my own living room. I buy used and/or vintage bags from local thrift shops all over Los Angeles and I customize them according to current accessory trends and to my own whims and inspiration. I have about 20 pieces so far (this is my first collection) and I have managed to post them on etsy.com only. At the moment I have plans to try and sell them to boutiques in Los Angeles, but I am waiting for my second collection to be over before I venture out there. I am working on a more upscale, less junior line.
Most of my bags are genuine leather. I add unique jewelry as straps, I paint some of them, or I add interesting pieces (such as feathers). I am inspired by what the high end designers do, but mostly I use my own imagination, which changes every day, and it could be something I find hidden in my closet, or an old photo, or from a dream. I can find inspiration from pretty much everything, everyone, everywhere.
I have always been fascinated by the old. As a society we are so used to accumulate new things that we get bored of quickly. The past contains something magical, and it CAN be new again, with some imagination and an inspired mind that looks to the future and the current trends. I like to go hunting for used and vintage items, such as grandmother's purses, and give them a fresh polish to make them look not only new but unique to your own personality. Just as no-one is old, nothing has to be old either. We can all be young forever, if we learn how to work it to our advantage. The interesting thing about it is that you can recognize your grandma's boring handbag in my creations, and think: wow, I wish I had kept it when I saw it in her dusty attic!
In terms of nightmares? Lack of confidence. Because believing in what you do is the number one key to success as a designer. However, just the wonderful support from my friends who keep telling me not to quit. That even though it's hard out there I need to keep trying, and to keep learning new techniques. Skill is very important when you work with one-of-a-kind customized pre-owned bags. I am determined to learn as much as I can about how to work with both metal and leather and improve everyday the look and feel of my designs.
